Eating out has never been so affordable – and delightful

If only we could take a moment to reflect on what eating healthily can do to our bodies and long-term health, then we would find that there is no need to look deep inside of ourselves at all. The remedy is all around us and right in our midst – traditional African food.

At Buffet Zone is situated around the corner from Church Square and serves homegrown and indigenous African cuisine, bringing food made for the people to the people. Most of its patrons are delighted in the restaurant’s consistency in serving them food they may have grown up eating – traditional African township cuisine.

It is hardly surprising that it has earned a reputation as the go-to restaurant for office-based employees and executives in and around the city centre ever since it arrived with a splash more than a decade ago, opening its first restaurant in Bureau Lane.

Of course, the food is affordably priced and the menu comparatively extensive but the attractions don’t end there. Its distinctive fare is complemented by the upmarket atmosphere, consisting of quality décor and furnishings.

Most local African foods are high in complex carbohydrates and protein and low in calories, fat and sugar, the bugbears of our wellbeing. The high fibre content in African cuisines helps to lower cholesterol, prevent constipation and to regulate blood sugar levels, qualities highly prized in the fight against obesity and the heart diseases associated with it.

At Buffet Zone boasts a range of veggies, starches, salads and condiments, on a menu that will certainly leave you feeling fuller for longer and give you enough energy to keep standing on your feet even when the workday is long over. Their scrumptious breakfast is to die for and you can pair it with an invigorating coffee to start the day on a firm footing.

At Buffet Zone also provide a catering service. Aimed at a lower income earner and popular with students is the adjacent sister restaurant, Sphahlo Paleis.

At Buffet Restaurant is at Shop 1, 28 WF Nkomo Street, Pretoria Central. Tel: 082 884 3574.

Good nutrition or healthy eating is a way of providing the body with adequate nutrients and of preventing and treating the various health conditions.

Top 5 Benefits of goodnutrition – Healthy Eating

  1. BRAIN HEALTH

Nutrition plays a very important role in promoting good mental health. The B group vitamins are those that most influence the healthy functioning of the brain and nervous system. For example: deficiency of vitamin B1 causes irritability and depression, whereas vitamin B6 deficiency can cause nervousness and fatigue. Minerals are directly involved in the activity of neurons; for example, a lack of magnesium can trigger nervousness and anxiety.

  1. HEART HEALTH

In order to function faithfully and constantly, the heart requires permanent blood supply

through the coronary arteries, and that provides sufficient oxygen and nutrients to the

heart. Anything that can obstruct the passage of blood through these vital arteries

can precipitate heart diseases, heart attack and cardiac arrest. Atherosclerosis is the buildup of fats or cholesterol in the coronary arteries and this can cause heart diseases.

Numerous studies have proved that the high consumption of saturated fat and cholesterol can lead to heart diseases. The preparation or cooking of meat in a healthy way; cutting down on processed foods and replacing animal fat with polyunsaturated fat from plant products; increasing the intake of fruits, vegetables and legumes, have been shown to be effective as health and/or eating practices when it comes to preventing heart diseases.

  1. CANCER

Cancer statistics for South Africa are staggering. Studies have indicated that 51.3% of females are diagnosed with cancer, with the figure for males at 48.6%. The fruits and vegetables are the most effective anticarcinogenic foods: studies have shown that the abundant consumption of fruits can prevent most cancers that affect humans. All fresh fruits are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and phytochemicals, which have the capability to neutralise carcinogenic substances entering the body. To give an example: Citrus fruits contain vitamin C, Flavonoids, Limonoids and Pectin, which have combined anticarcinogen properties.

  1. NON COMMUNICABLE CHRONIC DISEASES

Diabetes mellitus and hypertension are the leading chronic diseases when it comes to the main causal factors of natural death in South Africa. If these two conditions are not controlled, they can lead to rising incidences of nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, cardiovascular diseases and strokes, known for their high fatality outcomes.

Good nutrition therefore plays a very important role in preventing and managing these

chronic diseases. For instance, consumption of low GI, high fibre- and low-salt foods and

managing food portions well, along with healthy cooking methods and cutting down on processed food, will always prove beneficial when it comes to preventing and managing these conditions.

  1. CONSTIPATION AND FAECAL LOADING

Functional Constipation is now regarded as a chronic disorder that affects children and

adults alike. If not treated it may lead to several complications, such as recurrent urinary tract infections, psychosocial effects, faecal impaction, rectal bleeding or prolapse, anorexia and nausea.

Dietary fibre from legumes, fruits and vegetables shows benefits for intestinal function.

Pectin fibre has soothing and laxative properties and stimulates intestinal contractions.

Water intake has to be increased; if the patient has no condition that needs limited water

intake, then 2l or more of water per day is recommended to soften the stools.

Prevention is better than cure – good nutrition will always help to prevent or manage most

of the known medical health conditions and so is the monitoring of one’s weight or maintenance of a healthy weight.

All is welcome here…

Yoga instructor and lifelong practitioner Pritam Khalsa shares a personal experience.

Pritam Khalsa, of German parents, grew up in the Far East and Spain. South Africa has been her home since the 1980s. She and her husband owned a well-loved health shop in Johannesburg, Fruits & Roots, for 25 years. They are now in an intentional farm community in Robertson, in the Western Cape. When I practice yoga, I open to a space where

  • I can feel;
  • Look at everything in slow motion
  • Experience a sense of connectedness through the felt sense of the body.

I’m reassured that nothing is too small or big to handle. Practising yoga grows a sense of comfort and trust in myself. It has educated me away from dreading myself and fearing to be alone with myself. Now I can enjoy my company, too.

This was not always so. As well I did not set out with this as a goal. For long I oscillated between the comfortable, connected sense during practice – and an otherwise disconnected sense within self. I believe the soul is the spark of God in the human form. The soul is intrinsically good. We all have occasional small-mindedness, jealousy, arrogance, sadness, anxiety. The stark inner paradoxes pained me greatly.

Often times (but not enough!) the soul feels reachable, prayer comes easily, love for God blooms – and then it all vanishes in a flash in the all-too-human maelstrom of stark and painful emotions.

The yoga slows my psyche down, I notice the foreground, the background and the layers in-between. Here Rumi’s word, ‘All is welcome here’, holds true.  If it is sadness, anger or anxiety, I can process those feelings and do them justice. When their impact is softened, I more readily return to the soft light of the soul.

This is my joy in the four decades I have been practising. Yoga lends a sparkle and magic to the mundane – and so it should be: We are told heaven is in-dwelling! This particular quest might lead us to yoga!

I no longer fear or recoil from the more uncomfortable feelings. Instead I acknowledge that all feelings are part of this human flesh and bone. Perhaps feelings are ancestral, and we process out now, in real time, what the elders didn’t or couldn’t and the narratives they blessed and left us with.

The art itself creates a subtle energy flow. When I teach yoga (I train teachers, too) I pay attention to how the energy circulates best in the body. In yoga, we call this the Kundalini, the holy spark of life, the gift of God present in each of our 30 trillion cells. Though all shadows can be looked at and handled with kindness, the power of love proves bigger than the dross and weight of the world.

OA Pretoria – See the light…feel fresh and free

‘See the light…’. Or touch, feel and sense its power in all its multifarious but ever vibrant configurations. Such is the magnetic allure of Origin Aluminium products, the full range of which is available to order at Origin Aluminium Pretoria. True to form, the products broaden the horizons of our perceptions while encouraging us to go beyond the ordinary. In enticing us to discover a more fulfilling lifestyle, healthier to both humans and the environment, they symbolise that eclectic zone, taken to be the signature of our times, where functionality, fashion and ethical aspiration coalesce.

First and foremost, we cherish aluminium for many things: for its ease of maintenance, for being light and durable and for its capability to soundproof homeowners from the noise and madness without. Marry it with glass and you’re blessed with the sheer delight of a world of multiple and never-ending possibilities.

As for glass, it is worshipped for its ability to extend optical barriers, the very reason we consult ophthalmologists and opticians when our vision begins to fade and wobble. By the same measure, when used as a wall, glass has no equal. As was evident during the pandemic, work colleagues were transparently partitioned off from one another, absent an inhibiting solid wall completely cutting one off from one’s peers. Glass could cultivate a sense of the ‘unanime’ in such surroundings, the feeling that we’re in a shared space, with a shared destiny, thanks to the see-through shields and cubicles that divide, without inkling to disunite.

“There is a feeling of openness, freshness, freedom. It enhances the look of your home, building or office block,” says Origin Aluminium Pretoria Director Theresa Long, in explaining the attraction of the Origin range, which includes doors, windows (among which are the extremely popular Casement Window), showers and Origuard retractable security gates.

Implicit in the declaration on openness, freshness and freedom is the health dividend in the Origin Aluminium product, which ticks all the right boxes when it comes to healthy home and work surroundings (office, industrial and commercial spaces) – not to forget a healthy environment. These multiple benefits include:

  • Auditory: Aluminium has better acoustic properties and can keep the noise from infiltrating your interiors. This does a world of wonders to the health of your ears
  • Sanitation: if pandemics and gems require that you sanitise your surroundings constantly, then you can’t go wrong with aluminium. Aluminium product surfaces are smoother, corrosion-resistant and easier to maintain. Sanitising, spraying and cleaning doors and windows has never been easier

Pair Win Intelligent Technology Smart Battery Solutions is a premier hi-tech company from Hunan, China, that has made a name for itself in the battery energy market. The company describes itself as a manufacturer of comprehensive battery-powered portable intelligent products.

At a time when consistent energy supply is a topical issue and consumers are looking for dependable power supply alternatives, Pair Win and its products must be serious considerations. The Pair Win booth at the Solar & Storage Future Energy Expo held in March at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand showcased an extremely diverse range that underscored Pair Win’s capability to meet a variety of power requirements on the market. Another plus is that Pair Win can assist clients with battery pack customisation.

Their inventory carries lithium ion batteries, power stations and shared power exchange systems and their range covers consumer batteries, power batteries, storage batteries and deep-cycle batteries.

Consumer batteries are mainly lithium-ion batteries used in such simple devices as wrist watches, smart phones, cameras and tablets. Power batteries propel golf carts, scooters and drones while storage batteries consist of batteries that ensure a reliable supply of energy on power grids, such as solar or photovoltaic energy storage batteries and other renewable energy type of batteries. Examples of deep-cycle batteries are batteries that are liable to quick recharges due to their nature as a constant power source.  These are normally used in speed boats and are also very popular sources of power for caravans and camping trailers.

To ensure that every facet of day-to-day living is catered to, Pair Win also manufacture a range of batteries to power home appliances and personal consumer items. They are the go-to battery suppliers for such items as D.I.Y devices, portable electric fans, pedestal fans, electric dryers, right down to small batteries for the simple face cleaner or for your personal grooming kit.

Says Pair Win: “In terms of smart consumer products for household appliances, the company has developed a series of lithium DC variable frequency fans, with strong wind power, low noise and low energy consumption.”

Pair Win products are the result of rigorous research and testing, in partnership with some of the most respected research universities in the world. A series of inspection and testing equipment and protocols is carried out to ensure quality control. These operate in strict accordance with the ISO9001 system. This explains the numerous certifications and endorsements that Pair Win’s products have received.

Refreshingly different, centrally located

If you’re looking for a charming eatery to tuck in a quality light meal without breaking the bank, then come to Tajiri Caffē.  This cosy and classy eat-out in the heart of Pretoria Central scores highly on most indicators, and you definitely won’t regret coming.

High Court Judges, prosecutors and other court officials may like to mingle and dine here, but don’t be deterred: the cuisine is affordable. Tajiri Caffē is one of only a handful of restaurants where a decent meal in a decent setting can cost you between R100 and R150 on average.

“Everything is freshly baked, including the scones and the muffins,” says Lee, the manager. The food is also healthy and, buck for buck, Tajiri Caffē gives way more in value than rival and fast food joint competitors.

The breakfast menu contains open sandwiches, filled croissants and a delectable omelette. Why not try the large-portioned Tajiri Breakfast, served with sour dough, all for just R100! Be reminded that no two days are the same: the meal of the day roster makes every visit something to look forward to.

Equally impressive is the hot beverages menu which carries a range of coffees, hot chocolate, mocha and teas. You can also order a latte or juice on the cold beverages list.

Items like chicken pasta, chicken wings and Tajiri chicken burger and the in-house beef burger, both generously proportioned, sit side by side on a lunch menu with chuck steak, stuffed pancakes and herbed chicken, served with chips or salad.

The genuine leather seats will keep you warm in the winter and light blankets are arranged on every seat to ease your challenge should you wish to brave the outdoors. During the warm months, most of the seating arrangement goes outside, and you can relax to the soothing sounds of the fountain, Parisian-style.
